Tutorial 11 Review - thehelpfulcook.com
XML is what this lession is all about. It talkes about XML Documents and their basic principles as well as XML Declarations, comments, attributes, elements, and entity references. So basically a lot of seemingly complicated stuff. Overall though it is not too bad. I have seen a lot of XML based websites, especially integrated with flash lately. Seems like once you understand it that could be a great way to go when looking for a way to plug a lot of content into a site.
Tutorial 10 Review(new book) - Monroe Public Library
This tutorial is about Javascript. I find javascript to be both useful and cumbersome. This chapter was pretty easy though in that it pretty much taught programming basics. It showed us javascript variables and how to created a quick function then call it. Then it talked about commenting your code. Overall it’s easy enough to do the simple stuff.
The top image is the review, while the lower one is the tutorial.
Tutorial 10 Review (old book) - North Pole Novelties
This lesson was about JavaScript. It was an interesting change from normal html coding. I had some experience in prgraming before but never was able to apply it webpages. I'm glad to be learning about Java because I think it's a powerful tool that can be used to make some interesting webpages but like anything it has its limits.
Tutorial 9 Case 3 - Travel Scotland!
This Case focused on the frameset and Transitional DTDs. I used the W3C validator to find and correct errors on the site. It is interesting to find the errors that at the time the page was writtin were valid and have since changed.
Tutorial 9 Review 1 - Wizard Works
This lession works with XHTML and talks about the theory and history of XHTML. It also goes over the rules and how to create valid XHTML documents. One of the coolest things it talkes about is applying the correct DTD (Document Type Definition) to a web page. Once we apply the rigth DTD and validate it then we can make sure which browsers our site will work with.
Tutorial 8 Review - Cliff Hangers
This lesson was one I'd done before. It involves frames and how to make a layout using them. I think frames can have certain applications and I can see how they were once very popular. However they have enough downsides that I don't believe they will continue to be useful. Especially with today's design techniques and scripting languages.
Tutorial 7 Case 1 - 321-switch-ur-Roo-CSS-4-U-Homework so difficult it makes one want to go to the Loo - and not for 1 or 2
I had so much fun with this lesson. It was to create a website all controlled by a single CSS then to swap the CSS file effectifly changing the site. Of course all the content stays the same, the rest of the site changes though. I decided to to a holiday wishlist then to swap it up with a birthday wishlist, essentiall I only switched the colors and the basic images. I looked up so many new tags and previewed tons of different css files just to find a cool design I liked. I'm pretty happy with the turnout.
Tutorial 7 Review 1 - Scrapbooks
This tutorial was an introduction to CSS. I'm really excited about CSS. I never used much of it because I didn't really understand it very much. Now i am starting to understand how it works and how it can be used to make some really cool designs. I was disappointed in the book however for not showing the normal formatting for a CSS defintion. They put everything on one line like html does. That's not how most CSS is written. Small issue though, and something easily fixed just by using the correct formatting.
Tutorial 6 Review 1 - Lan Gear
I learned something new in this lesson. I had never used forms before, I knew about them, but I had never build one before. I can see some really cool uses for forms depending on the site. I think that HTML forms are pretty basic and imperfect but still could be useful.
Tutorial 5 Review 1 - Yale Climbing Club
Frames we used in the making of this page. In this tutorial I learned how to design and build a site using frames. I think frames have a very specific use and are overall a pretty good tool, however they do have their limitations and are somewhat confusing. I never liked using frames before because they don't always give enough design control.
Tutorial 4 Case 1 - Template Crazy
This exercise made use create new templates to use in our web design career. Christian taught us how a good basic design can save hours of coding later on and how important it is to have a flexible design. Not every page and site will be the same but a lot of the basics will be so having that done is a big help. Also it helps us remember to use proper commenting conventions.
Tutorial 4 Review 1 - Park City Gazette
This tutorial is all about tables. It shows how to make a normal table as well as how to use a table to make design for web pages. I think tables are very useful and a great way to make designs.
Tutorial 3 Case 1 - Pixal
In this case file I created a site that used an image map over a navigation bar for navigating the site. Other than that it was a review of other skills I had already learned in previous tutorials.
Tutorial 3 Review 1 - Arcadium
This tutorial had a lot to do with styles and format. I also learned about colors and how I can use them and which ones are safe for the web. The second section of the chapter went over some of the different images types I should use and why certain formats are good for transparency and others are good for compression. Also I never considered it could take longer to decompress a highly compressed file than it would be to just have the file size bigger and download it. Another very important thing I learned is how to use image maps with hot spots on a picture to link to other pages.
Independent Case 1 - Home Page
The assignment for this case was to make a home page and portfolio to display the assignments from the class. I decided to go above and beyond and use a table(which at this point the book has not taught) to create my web site and portfolio. I had to look up some tags I'd forgotten but here it is up and working none-the-less.
Tutorial 2 Review 1 - Dube' Review
The review assignment for tutorial to had us linking documents to other documents as well as making a list on a page with links to different letters, it built upon using in page anchor tags to make links within the list.
Tutorial 1 Case 3 - Frostbite Freeze
In case 1 of tutorial 1 I was able to use some of the knowledge I learned in Tutorial 1 to make a web page that displays the results from a footrace. I learned some new formatting tags and practiced the skills I just learned.
Tutorial 1 Review 1 - Mr. Dube'
In the first tutorial of the book I learned how to create a basic web site as well as perform some simple formatting tasks with in line styles.
